It’s a first in the History of humanitarian WASH: ahead of the UN_Water Conference, organizations are collaborating on a CallToAction urging UN Member States to respond to 5 specific demands:
Aiming to strengthen the WASH sector via strong and inclusive actions, the Advocacy for WASH initiative of the WASH Road Map developed a Call To Action for survival and resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) around the United Nations 2023 Water Conference (UN23WC). The last edition of this high-level meeting took place over 45 years ago and not enough has been done since to offer the humanitarian WASH sector needed resources and capacity to accurately respond to urgent needs from the field. Today, 2,2 billions people still lack access to safely managed drinkable water and almost twice as much, around 55% of the global population, can not use safe sanitation services.
Co-leads of the initiative have thus developed an opportunity for actors to raise their voices, share their concern and urge for change: a Call To Action accessible to all (humanitarian WASH or not), because it is only by multiplying our efforts and joining our forces that we can offer a qualitative and reactive humanitarian response at scale.
Join IHIP, other NGOs, research institutes, agencies, and many others in signing the Resilient & Survival #WASH #CallToAction, to push for the representation of Fragile, Violent, and Conflict contexts-living populations at the UN_Water Conference!

Improving the quality of the humanitarian response: how the WASH and private sector actors are contributing
Presenters:

Session description:
Quality in delivered WASH infrastructure within the humanitarian response has been a concern for the sector from multiple angles. Within the 2020 -2025 WASH Sector Road Map, Initiative 1.4 on WASH Quality Assurance and Accountability System (QAAS) the GWC and the implementing partners are developing an integrated system, with the aim to promote and apply quality monitoring process into National Cluster Partners and National Humanitarian WASH Coordination Platforms. The recently 2022 harmonized construction contracts for humanitarian works is opening the possibility for better quality assurance at the project level, through legal and binding mechanism, building on legal mechanism at the project level to feed and consolidate best practices into lessons learned. In line with the donor’s perspective, the panelists will detail to the audience how we could achieve a workable quality framework for the sector and how existing good practices from the Shelter sector as regards the quality of the services provided can fit into the WASH humanitarian sector.
The session cover the following topic:
How can perspectives around infrastructure quality, contractual mechanisms and private sector vision be integrated into the AQA mechanism? Which contribution from local project to a country level vision
6.What we are missing to have a multi sectorial workable quality framework (discussion)
What harmonized quality assurance system?
Which quality level & indicators & certification to trigger a dialogue with nexus partners (and join trust funds mechanism)?
How the GWC could be equipped with standards when delivering infrastructure?
How to attract funding in a stable environment as well to support quality in a non-emergency context?
On sept 8th 2022, during the 2022 IHIP general assembly of members, Pieter Mattelaer was elected as the new presidenf of IHIP.
Pieter Mattelaer is the deputy group leader of the Project Portfolio Management group at CERN. The group is responsible for the major construction projects at CERN in the fields of civil engineering and buildings. As an early adopter of the latest tools and processes used in the construction sector, he will advise IHIP on the added value they can bring to the humanitarian sector.
IHIP would like to also express warm thanks for its long term support to the work of the association to the previous president : Mr Thomas Nydegger.
On April 12th, both boards of the Federation of African Engineering Association and IHIP signed a detailled MoU for the next 3 years. This MoU will facilitate the coordination between Engineering and Humanitarian organizations in Africa related to infrastructure works.
This MoU details how both of organization will join forces to promote a shared agenda. Building on the Conditions Of Particular Application to conditions of contract for humanitarian works, IHIP will share its knowledge and coordination mechanism with the members of the humanitarian sector. FAEO will share its network of qualified members throughout Africa. Crossed participation through working groups, workshops and conferences will allow best practices and consolidation of feedback to equip the sector with strong de risking procurement updates.
The common goal is to have local based engineering solutions to contribute as much as possible to the humanitarian response in Africa.
The International Humanitarian Infrastructure Platform (IHIP) and LALIVE SA (LALIVE) agreed on 3 March 2022 that LALIVE will assist IHIP on a pro bono basis on the legal review of the Conditions of Contract IHIP has published for humanitarian settlement
